چکیده

We report on the detection of the lowest CO J = 1 − 0 transition in the powerful high-redshift radio galaxy 4C 60.07 at z = 3.79. The CO emission is distributed in two spatially and kinematically distinct components as was previously known from the observations of the higher excitation CO J = 4 − 3 line. The total molecular gas mass in 4C 60.07 inferred from the CO J = 1 − 0 emission is M (H2) ≃ 1.3 × 10 11 M⊙ , sufficient to fuel the inferred star-formation rate of ∼ 1600 M⊙ yr −1 for 10 8 yrs. From our high-resolution CO J = 1 − 0 VLA maps we find the dynamical mass of 4C 60.07 to be comparable to that of a giant elliptical at the present time. A significant fraction of the mass is in the form of molecular gas suggesting that 4C 60.07 is in an early state of its evolution. The merging nature of 4C 60.07 along with its large dynamical mass imply that this system is a giant elliptical caught in its formative stages.

Observing Cold Gas in Submillimeter Galaxies: Detection of Co (1!0) Emission in Smm J13120+4242 with the Green Bank Telescope

We report the first detection of CO (1!0) emission from a submillimeter-selected galaxy, using the Green Bank Telescope. We identify the line in the spectrum of SMM J13120+4242 as a broad emission feature at z 1⁄4 3:408, with VFWHM 1⁄4 1040 190 km s . If the observed CO (1!0) line profile arises from a single object and not several merging objects, then the CO (4!3)/CO (1!0) brightness temperat...

A search for molecular gas in a high - redshift radio galaxyR

There is reason to suspect that 4C 41.17, a radio galaxy at z = 3:800 0:003, contains a large quantity of enriched molecular gas. We describe a search for CO in 4C 41.17, taking advantage of the fact that the J = 1 ! 0 rotational transition is redshifted into the radio-frequency band centred at 23 GHz for 3:80 < z < 4:25. There is no sign of CO line emission in our resulting spectrum, which cov...

Detection of Two Massive CO Systems in 4 C 41 . 17 at z = 3 . 8

We have detected CO(4−3) in the z=3.8 radio galaxy 4C 41.17 with the IRAM Interferometer. The CO is in two massive (M dyn ∼ 6×10 10 M ⊙) systems separated by 1. ′′ 8 (13 kpc), and by 400 km s −1 in velocity, which coincide with two different dark lanes in a deep Lyα image. One CO component coincides with the cm-radio core of the radio galaxy, and its redshift is close to that of the He II λ 164...

Co (j = 3 { 2) Emission in the Radio Galaxy 53w002 at Z=2.394

We report a sensitive search for redshifted CO (3{2) emission from the weak radio galaxy 53W002 at z=2.394. Maps at resolutions of 3 00 and 235 km s ?1 show a signiicant emission peak within 0.5 00 of the optical and radio continuum peaks. The measured narrow band ux is approximately ten times the extrapolated cm-wavelength non-thermal radio continuum expected at 101.9 GHz and exhibits a spectr...

A sensitive search for CO J = 1 – 0 emission in 4 C 41 . 17 : high - excitation molecular gas at z = 3 . 8

We report sensitive imaging observations of the CO J=1–0 line emission in the powerful high-redshift radio galaxy 4C 41.17 (z = 3.8) with the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA), conducted in order to detect the large concomitant H2 gas reservoir recently unveiled in this system by De Breuck et al. (2005) via the emission of the high excitation J=4–3 line. Our observations fail to detect the J=1–0 line...
